Most people can do it in four to eight months alongside a job.<\/p>\n

This guide is about those decisions rather than about the syllabus. What to learn is the easy part and it is well documented; what trips people up is picking the wrong route, applying to the wrong list, and arriving at the interview with a certificate instead of evidence.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Confirm you are eligible, which you probably are<\/h2>\n

The bar is a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Indian job postings for analyst roles say “any graduate” far more often than they name a stream, and the degree is mostly there to satisfy an applicant tracking system rather than to test anything.<\/p>\n

You do not need a computer science background, a master’s, or maths beyond school level plus working statistics. What is actually screened is whether you can query data, summarise it, and explain what it means to someone who does not work in data. One genuine exception: some analyst roles in banks, credit and risk functions do specify a quantitative degree. That is a narrow slice of the market, not the market.<\/p>\n

Step 3: Learn the stack in the order that gets you hired<\/h2>\n

Excel first, then SQL, then one BI tool, then Python, then working statistics. That order is not arbitrary. SQL is the most tested skill in Indian analyst interviews and Excel is still where most business reporting lives, so learning them first means you can start interviewing months before you have finished everything else.<\/p>\n

Python is worth the investment because it opens the better-paying half of the market, but starting with it is the classic mistake. It has no natural stopping point, and four months in you can write loops and still cannot answer “which cities are dragging down our margin”.<\/p>\n

Leave out machine learning, big data tooling and cloud certifications entirely for now. None of them will get you a first analyst job in India.<\/p>\n

Step 4: Build proof, not a certificate collection<\/h2>\n

An interviewer cannot probe a certificate. They can probe a project, and they will.<\/p>\n

Three finished projects is the target. Each one needs a question worth asking, data you did not get from a tutorial, a written conclusion, and an honest note on what you could not determine. Choose data with an Indian business context where you can, because you will find it easier to reason about a retailer’s city-wise sales than about a dataset you have no intuition for.<\/p>\n

The two failure modes are worth naming. The first is the dashboard with fourteen charts and no finding. The second is the notebook that ends at the model with no sentence about what anyone should do differently. Both read as coursework, and interviewers have seen thousands of both.<\/p>\n

Step 5: Apply like it is a process, because it is<\/h2>\n

Resume.<\/strong> One page. Put the tools in a skills line so keyword screens find them, then lead each project bullet with the outcome rather than the method. “Cut a weekly report from four hours to twenty minutes by rebuilding it in Power BI” beats “worked on Power BI dashboards”. Name the tools in the same words the posting uses, because the first screen is often automated.<\/p>\n

Where to apply.<\/strong> Naukri and LinkedIn carry the volume, and company career pages carry the roles that never reach either. Referrals convert several times better than cold applications, so tell everyone you already know what you are looking for. Analyst roles are also advertised as MIS executive, reporting analyst and business analyst, so search those titles too.<\/p>\n

How much.<\/strong> Fifty applications is a floor. Expect the first ten to teach you what is wrong with your resume, and treat a run of silence as feedback on your target list rather than on your ability.<\/p>\n

When.<\/strong> Start applying once SQL is solid and one project is finished. Waiting until everything is complete costs you two months of interview practice you cannot get any other way.<\/p>\n

Step 6: Clear the interview loop<\/h2>\n

The first analyst job is rarely the well-paid one. The salary tables in India show the largest single step arriving at the two to three year mark, and it lands on people who moved employers.<\/p>\n

So use the first months deliberately. Learn how the business actually makes money, get your name attached to one recurring report that people rely on, and keep a private log of the questions you answered and what changed as a result. That log becomes your next resume, and it is far more persuasive than a list of tools.<\/p>\n
