Masai School’s published schedule bills ₹3,50,000 over 36 months if you are placed on a package between ₹5 and ₹9.99 LPA, as listed in September 2026. Live online analytics programmes with placement support and an ordinary upfront fee sell for ₹55,000 to ₹90,000.

That gap is the product. You are buying the right to not pay now, and to pay nothing at all if it fails, and the price of that right is several lakh rupees. Whether it is worth paying is a real question with a real answer for some people, and this article is about how to work out which one you are.

The two shapes these agreements take

A deferred fee. A fixed total, banded by what you end up earning, which you start repaying in instalments once you are placed above a threshold. Masai’s schedule is this kind. The total is a number you can see before you sign.

An income share agreement. A percentage of your salary for a fixed term, or a percentage of first-year CTC. NxtWave’s postpaid option is a hybrid: part fixed, part percentage. The total is not a number you can see, because it depends on a salary you do not have yet.

The distinction matters more than the branding on the page. With a deferred fee you can price the deal today. With an income share you can only price it by doing the arithmetic yourself, on a salary you are guessing at, which is exactly why the arithmetic is the first thing to do.

Worked example one: Masai School’s published schedule

Masai publishes its Pay After Placement terms on its own fees page, which most providers using this model do not. The schedule below is as it read in September 2026.

Your CTC once placed, as listed in September 2026

Monthly repayment

Months

Total you repay

Below ₹3.5 LPA

Nothing

Not applicable

₹0

₹3.5 to ₹4.99 LPA

₹6,944

36

₹2,50,000

₹5 to ₹9.99 LPA

₹9,722

36

₹3,50,000

₹10 LPA and above

₹15,000

30

₹4,50,000

Alongside it sits the clause the model is sold on: if you do not receive a job offer within one year of completing the course, you pay nothing. Fees last checked September 2026; confirm current numbers with the provider before enrolling.

Read the middle band carefully, because it is where most people land. A ₹5 LPA package is about ₹41,667 a month before tax, and ₹9,722 of that is close to a quarter of your gross monthly pay, every month, for three years. The band is also wide: on the schedule as listed in September 2026, someone placed at ₹5 LPA and someone placed at ₹9.99 LPA repay the identical ₹3,50,000, so the deal gets steadily better the higher up the band you land and is at its worst at the bottom of it.

None of that makes the terms dishonest. They are published, capped and legible, which is more than can be said for most of this market. It makes them expensive.

Worked example two: NxtWave publishes both prices, so you can do the sum

NxtWave’s data analyst page offers a straight choice: ₹90,000 prepaid, or ₹49,000 plus 12% of your first-year CTC postpaid, with a ₹16,000 scholarship shown on the page. It also states plainly that the programme is not a job guarantee programme. All of that is as listed in July 2026.

Now the arithmetic, which takes thirty seconds and which nobody does.

On the terms as listed in July 2026, a placement at ₹6 LPA means 12% of first-year CTC is ₹72,000. Add the ₹49,000 and the postpaid route costs ₹1,21,000 against ₹90,000 prepaid. Placed at ₹8 LPA it costs ₹1,45,000. The two routes cost the same only at a first-year package of about ₹3.4 lakh, and below that the postpaid route is cheaper.

So the deferred option wins only if you end up earning less than roughly ₹3.4 lakh a year, which is the one outcome nobody enrolling is aiming for. Put another way: you are paying between ₹31,000 and ₹55,000 for the insurance of paying nothing if you are never placed. Whether that is a fair price is your call, but it is a price, and it is visible only because NxtWave published both numbers.

Worked example three: the same provider, two prices, 3.2 times apart

AccioJob runs a Pay After Placement model across the company. On this check it was shown against their Full Stack Development course at ₹2,40,000 payable after placement, or ₹75,000 upfront over a 12-month plan, as listed in September 2026.

That is the clearest statement of the trade anywhere in this market: 3.2 times the price for the same training, bought on deferred terms.

Their Data Analyst course is not sold on that model at all. It lists ₹65,000 for the online batch and ₹70,000 for the offline one, with no-cost EMI from ₹5,417 a month over 12 months, again as listed in September 2026. Worth noticing, because a provider that offers pay after placement on one course and not another is telling you something about where the model actually makes commercial sense.

The clauses that decide what you owe

The headline is never the contract. These are the eight things to find in the agreement itself, in roughly the order they bite.

The salary threshold. Below what package do you owe nothing. Masai’s is ₹3.5 LPA, as listed in September 2026. If a provider will not state one, the answer is that any job counts.

What counts as a job. Internshala’s published refund conditions for its data analyst placement course are framed around a ₹40,000 stipend threshold rather than a full-time salary, as listed in July 2026. Ask in writing whether an internship, a contract role, a stipend or a job you found yourself triggers repayment.

The term and the total. Get the total in rupees, not the monthly figure. Thirty-six months of a number that sounds small is how a ₹9,722 instalment becomes ₹3,50,000.

What happens if you decline an offer. Most agreements of this kind void the protection if you refuse a qualifying offer. Ask how many you may decline and who decides whether one qualifies.

What happens if the job ends. If you are laid off in month four of a thirty-six month repayment, does the clock pause, stop or keep running.

What is non-refundable regardless. Registration charges are separate from the deferred fee and usually survive everything. PW Skills, as an example of how this is written, charges a ₹10,000 registration fee that is non-refundable on its Premium and Pro plans, as listed in September 2026.

Who holds the paper. The agreement is often with a lender rather than the institute. Ask whether it is reported to a credit bureau, what the default terms are, and whether interest accrues during the gap before you are placed.

The conditions you must keep meeting. Internshala publishes its: 75% attendance in live sessions, a 75% aggregate score, at least seven job applications a week through their portal, and no skipped or cancelled interviews without approval, as listed in July 2026. Those are their terms and publishing them is to their credit. Treat any comparable set as a second part-time job, because that is what sustaining it for six months is.

Pay after placement against paying upfront

Route

Paid before you start

Total if placed at ₹6 LPA

Notes

Masai School, Pay After Placement

₹0

₹3,50,000 over 36 months

Nothing owed below ₹3.5 LPA, or if no offer arrives within a year of completion

NxtWave, postpaid

₹49,000

About ₹1,21,000

₹49,000 plus 12% of first-year CTC; their page states it is not a job guarantee, as listed in July 2026

NxtWave, prepaid

₹90,000

₹90,000

A ₹16,000 scholarship is shown on the same page

AccioJob Data Analyst, upfront

₹65,000 online

₹65,000

No-cost EMI from ₹5,417 a month; pay after placement is not offered on this course

Intellipaat, upfront

₹55,005

₹55,005

EMI from ₹5,000 a month at 0% interest

SkilloVilla Data Analytics with Python

₹71,999, currently ₹58,999

₹58,999

Upfront fee, placement assistance, no pay after placement

Every competitor figure above is as listed on that provider’s own page in July or September 2026, as marked. Where a single provider publishes both routes for the same course, the cost of deferring is visible on its own: ₹31,000 at NxtWave for a placement at ₹6 LPA, and ₹1,65,000 at AccioJob, which sells the same training at ₹2,40,000 deferred or ₹75,000 upfront.

When pay after placement is genuinely the right call

Two cases, and they are real.

The first is simple. If you cannot raise ₹55,000 to ₹90,000, have no access to a loan and no family who can lend it, then ₹0 upfront is not a premium you are paying. It is the only door that opens. Paying ₹3,50,000 over three years out of a salary you would not otherwise have is a better outcome than not training at all, and anyone telling you the arithmetic says otherwise is comparing you to a person with savings.

The second is about incentives. An institute that gets paid only when you are placed has a financial stake in placing you, which an institute holding your money already does not. That alignment is the strongest argument for the model and it is not marketing, it is structural.

The counterweight to the second point is that the same alignment gives them a say in which offer you take. A provider that is paid when you accept a job wants you to accept a job. Your interests and theirs align on being placed and diverge on being placed well.

What to ask before you sign

Ask these in writing, and treat a refusal to answer as the answer.

What is the total number of rupees I repay if I am placed at ₹6 lakh, and at ₹12 lakh?

What package counts as placed, and does a stipend, internship or contract role count?

What happens if I decline an offer, and how many may I decline?

What if I am laid off four months into repayment?

Who holds the agreement, and does it appear on my credit record?

What do I owe if I leave the course in month two?

Does anything accrue between finishing the course and being placed?

Can I read the full agreement before paying the registration fee?

That last one sorts the market quickly. A provider that will show you the contract before taking money is in a different category from one that will not, whatever either of them charges. Our guide to red flags in data course advertising covers the rest of the signals worth watching, and what placement assistance really means covers the vocabulary these pages use.

Where SkilloVilla stands, so you can discount accordingly

SkilloVilla does not sell pay after placement or income share agreements. Its programmes carry an upfront fee with an EMI option and additional scholarships based on candidate profile, and it offers placement assistance rather than a job guarantee. The Data Analytics with Python track is ₹71,999, currently ₹58,999, and the Data Science & AI track is ₹1,01,999, currently ₹89,999. Alumni earn 4 to 15 LPA, as published by the company, with a median package of 9.5 LPA.

We sell the upfront model, so weigh this article accordingly and check every figure in it against the provider’s own page. The arithmetic is deliberately shown rather than summarised so you can redo it.

And the honest limitation: if ₹0 upfront is a hard requirement for you rather than a preference, SkilloVilla is not the answer, and the right move is to read the agreements of the providers that do offer it with the eight questions above in hand.

For what the upfront market actually costs, our breakdown of data analyst course fees in India covers the field, and job guarantee versus placement assistance covers the other contract you will be offered.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pay after placement course?

It is a training programme you enrol in without paying upfront, repaying either a fixed deferred fee or a share of your salary once you are placed above a stated threshold. The two forms are priced very differently: a deferred fee has a total you can read before signing, while an income share does not, because it depends on a salary you do not yet have.

Is pay after placement cheaper than paying upfront?

Almost never, if you get a job. Masai’s published schedule totals ₹2,50,000 to ₹4,50,000 depending on your package, as listed in September 2026, against ₹55,000 to ₹90,000 for a live online programme with placement support bought upfront. NxtWave publishes both routes for the same course, and its postpaid option costs less only at a first-year package below about ₹3.4 lakh.

What is the salary threshold in a pay after placement agreement?

It is the package below which you owe nothing, and it varies by provider. Masai sets it at ₹3.5 LPA, as listed in September 2026. Always ask what counts toward the threshold, since Internshala’s published terms, for instance, are framed around a ₹40,000 stipend figure rather than a full-time salary, as listed in July 2026.

What happens if I never get a job at all?

Under a properly written agreement, nothing: Masai states that a learner with no offer within one year of course completion pays nothing, as listed in September 2026. What matters is the wording around that clause, specifically whether declining an offer, missing attendance conditions or failing an internal assessment removes the protection. That is where these contracts differ from one another.

Does pay after placement mean a job is guaranteed?

No, and the better providers say so. NxtWave’s page states outright that its programme is not a job guarantee programme even though it sells a postpaid option, as listed in July 2026. A deferred fee changes when and whether you pay; it does not oblige any company to hire you, because no training provider controls another employer’s hiring.

Does SkilloVilla offer a pay after placement course?

No. SkilloVilla charges an upfront fee with an EMI option and additional scholarships based on candidate profile, and sells placement assistance rather than a job guarantee. If deferred payment is what you need, look elsewhere and read the agreement closely; if you can pay upfront, the arithmetic in this article suggests you should.

Do the sum before you sign anything

Every number in this article came off a provider’s own page, and the only skill required to use it is multiplication. Work out your total at a realistic package, not an aspirational one, and compare it against the upfront price of the same training.

If the upfront route is open to you, SkilloVilla’s Data Analytics with Python track at ₹71,999, currently ₹58,999, runs 4 to 5 months of live classes with 1:1 mentorship from working analysts, real projects and placement assistance. Take the eight questions above into a counselling call with whoever you are considering, including us, and see who answers them straight.

How pay
