If an ad demands machine learning, Spark and a master’s degree for a role paying ₹5 lakh, it is a badly written ad, not a signal that you are underqualified. Apply anyway.

Three things are worth reading off that table. MIS executive is the largest cluster of low-paid data work in India and is frequently advertised as a data analyst role, so check the responsibilities before accepting. Data engineer pays substantially more than data analyst at the same experience, and gets far less attention from career changers. And business analyst, despite the similar title, is a different job: more process and requirements work, less querying.

An analyst in financial services earns roughly 64 percent more than one in IT services for the same title, and more than double a BPO analyst. The catch is where the openings are: IT services and consulting accounts for 45,258 of the reported salaries, more than every other industry on the list combined. That is the standard Indian trade-off, and the standard answer is to take the services job to get in, then move once you have two years and a domain.

Gurugram pays the most at an average of ₹7,56,027 across 9,551 reported salaries, but Bengaluru dominates on volume with 34,467 salaries at ₹7,39,588. Then come New Delhi at ₹7,15,369, Hyderabad at ₹7,05,356, Mumbai at ₹6,88,306, Chennai at ₹6,86,103 and Pune at ₹6,83,592.
The gap across those metros is about 11 percent, so relocating for a city premium rarely pays after rent. What Bengaluru genuinely offers is density: more employers in one place means more interviews, more competing offers, and a shorter job search. The bigger gap is metro versus tier-2, where Ahmedabad averages ₹5,53,823.
How to read an Indian data analyst job ad
Check the tools before the title. An ad that lists only Excel and a reporting portal is an MIS role regardless of what it is called. An ad that lists SQL, a BI tool and a warehouse is the real thing.
Watch for the reporting line. Sitting inside a business function usually means broader work and better stakeholder exposure. Sitting inside a central shared-services team often means executing tickets.
Treat “experience” ranges as soft. Indian ads routinely ask for three years for genuinely junior work. Apply if you clear the tools bar.
Look for the word “stakeholder”. Where it appears, the role involves judgement. Where the ad is only verbs like extract, prepare and publish, the role is production reporting.
What the job is not
It is not a glamour role, and it is not mostly modelling. A realistic first year is heavy on data cleaning, chasing down why two systems disagree, and rebuilding reports because a definition changed. People who came expecting machine learning leave within a year; people who like solving small mysteries about why a number is wrong tend to do well and get promoted.
It is also not a route into data science by itself. It is a good starting point, but the transition needs deliberate work on statistics and Python on top of the day job.
