A data analyst pulls data out of a company’s systems, checks it, turns it into numbers a business team can act on, and explains what those numbers mean. In India that usually means SQL against a warehouse, cleanup in Excel or Python, a dashboard in Power BI or Tableau, and a conversation with whoever owns the metric.
The role is also the widest door into data work in the country. AmbitionBox holds 1,44,866 reported data analyst salaries in India, more than double the number for data scientists, and puts the median CTC at ₹6,84,517 with 18 percent growth over the last two years. Indeed India, which measures advertised salaries rather than employee reports, lands close at ₹6,55,191, and PayScale reports ₹5,77,472 in base pay. Unlike the data scientist market, the three sources broadly agree, because the job itself is fairly uniform.
The standard data analyst job description
Indian job ads vary in wording but almost never in substance. This is what the responsibilities section actually contains.
Core responsibilities
- Write SQL queries against the company’s databases and warehouse to answer business questions.
- Clean, validate and reconcile datasets, and investigate where numbers disagree between systems.
- Build and maintain dashboards and recurring reports in Power BI, Tableau or Excel.
- Run ad hoc analyses when a function head needs to understand why a metric moved.
- Define and document metrics so different teams stop reporting different versions of the same number.
- Present findings and recommendations to business stakeholders, with the caveats attached.
- Automate manual reporting work so the same file is not rebuilt by hand every month.
Requirements you will see
- A bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Engineering, commerce, statistics, economics and BBA are all common, and no specific stream is mandatory at most employers.
- Working SQL, including joins, aggregation and window functions.
- Advanced Excel, including pivot tables, lookups and ideally Power Query.
- Experience with at least one BI tool.
- Comfort with statistics at a descriptive level.
- Clear written and spoken communication, which is tested in the final round far more often than candidates expect.
Listed as nice to have
- Python with pandas, increasingly listed as required rather than preferred.
- Domain exposure to the employer’s sector, particularly in BFSI and healthcare.
- Cloud warehouse familiarity such as Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift.
- Basic machine learning, which is genuinely optional for an analyst role.
If an ad demands machine learning, Spark and a master’s degree for a role paying ₹5 lakh, it is a badly written ad, not a signal that you are underqualified. Apply anyway.
Data analyst roles and responsibilities, as the job is actually done
A responsibilities list reads as seven separate duties. In practice they run together across a day and a week, and the tool changes from one task to the next. This is how the list above turns into the job.
A day in the role
| Part of the day | What the analyst is doing | Tools |
|---|---|---|
| First hour | Checking that the overnight report refresh ran and that yesterday’s numbers look sane, and chasing anything that does not | The BI tool, then SQL to find the cause |
| Morning | Picking up requests from the business, such as why orders from Pune fell last week, and agreeing exactly what question is being asked | Email or chat, and the team’s ticket tracker |
| Middle of the day | The analysis itself: pulling the data, cleaning it, joining tables and cutting the result by city, channel or week | SQL against the warehouse, then Excel or Python with pandas |
| Afternoon | Turning the result into a chart or a dashboard tile and writing down what it shows, with the caveats | Power BI or Tableau, Excel charts, a short written note or a few slides |
| End of the day | Sharing the finding with whoever asked, and noting any metric definition that came up so the next person does not redo the work | A shared document or data dictionary |
A week in the role
| Part of the week | Responsibility | Tools |
|---|---|---|
| Start of the week | The weekly numbers: refresh the business review dashboard and be ready to explain every movement in it | The BI tool and SQL |
| Midweek | Ad hoc requests, plus one larger piece of work such as a cohort analysis, a campaign result or an experiment read-out | SQL, Excel pivot tables or Python |
| Any day it happens | Data quality: two systems disagree on a total, a feed arrives late or a field changes meaning, and the analyst finds out why, often with a data engineer | SQL |
| End of the week | Presenting findings to the team that owns the metric, and automating one manual report so it is not rebuilt by hand next week | Slides or the dashboard itself; Power Query, Python or a scheduled refresh |
Each responsibility and the tool it runs on
| Responsibility | Tool most Indian teams use | What doing it well looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Writing queries to answer business questions | SQL on the company database or a cloud warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift | A query someone else can read, rerun and trust, with joins that do not quietly duplicate rows |
| Cleaning, validating and reconciling data | SQL, Excel, Power Query or Python with pandas | Row counts checked before and after every step, and a written note of what was changed |
| Dashboards and recurring reports | Power BI or Tableau; Excel in smaller teams | A few numbers that answer the owner’s question, refreshed without anyone touching them |
| Ad hoc analysis | SQL with Excel pivot tables, or Python | An answer to the question asked, delivered when it is still useful |
| Defining and documenting metrics | A shared document or data dictionary, and the BI tool’s data model | One definition of each number, used by every team |
| Presenting findings | Slides, a short written summary, or the dashboard | A recommendation with its caveats, in the business’s language rather than the method’s |
| Automating manual reporting | Power Query, Python scripts, scheduled refreshes in the BI tool | A report that used to take a morning now takes nothing |
If one of these tools is new to you, start with the guide for it: SQL joins with examples, Excel for data analysis, the Power BI tutorial for beginners and Python for data analysis.
How the list changes with company size
The same seven responsibilities show up at every employer, but how much of each you do depends heavily on where you sit.
| Where you work | How the job differs | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Startup, often one of the first analysts | You do everything, from setting up event tracking and building the first tables to the dashboards and the board-meeting numbers. Much of the work borders on data engineering | Fast learning and broad exposure, little review of your work, and messier data |
| Mid-size or growth company | You own one business area, such as marketing, operations or a product, work alongside a data engineer and define the metrics for that area | The closest match to the job description above, and where stakeholder work grows fastest |
| Large enterprise, bank or global capability centre | A narrower slice of the work, controlled access to data, set processes and review steps, and regulatory or management reporting with fixed formats | Deep knowledge of one domain and more polish, but slower change and less choice of tools |
| IT services or analytics consulting firm | Project work for a client, on the client’s tools and data, with documentation and deadlines set by the contract | Many tools and industries in a few years, and the easiest door into the field |
Read a job ad with this in mind. A startup ad that lists everything is describing the job honestly. An enterprise ad that lists everything usually means one or two of those lines are the job and the rest is template.
The same job description at three levels
| Level | What you are actually accountable for | Typical experience | AmbitionBox average CTC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior data analyst | Executing requests accurately and on time | 0 to 2 years | ₹5,50,849 at 1 to 3 years |
| Data analyst | Owning a business area’s reporting and metric definitions | 2 to 5 years | ₹7,61,490 at 3 to 6 years |
| Senior or lead analyst | Choosing which questions get asked, and mentoring juniors | 5 years and up | Overlaps analytics manager at ₹26,98,420 |
The step that matters is the second one. Junior analysts answer questions; analysts decide what the number means and are trusted to say when the data cannot support the conclusion someone wants.
Data analytics jobs in India: the full role map
“Data analytics jobs” covers a lot more than one title. These are the roles that hire in volume in India, with pay drawn from AmbitionBox in August 2026.
| Role | What it does | Median annual CTC | Salaries reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIS executive | Recurring operational reporting, mostly in Excel | ₹3,31,961 | 60,990 |
| Data analyst | Queries, dashboards, analysis for a business team | ₹6,84,517 | 1,44,866 |
| Database administrator | Keeps databases available, secure and performant | ₹8,69,040 | 1,300 |
| Business intelligence developer | Builds and maintains the reporting layer itself | ₹8,71,131 | 2,055 |
| Business analyst | Bridges business requirements and technical delivery | ₹10,07,445 | 1,51,386 |
| Product analyst | Analytics inside a product team, heavy on experiments | ₹12,19,275 | 849 |
| Data engineer | Builds the pipelines and warehouse everyone else uses | ₹12,33,461 | 1,06,608 |
| Data scientist | Predictive models and experimentation | ₹16,08,105 | 60,746 |
| Analytics manager | Runs an analytics team and its roadmap | ₹26,98,420 | 3,673 |
| Data architect | Designs how data is stored and flows across the company | ₹35,08,690 | 2,790 |
Three things are worth reading off that table. MIS executive is the largest cluster of low-paid data work in India and is frequently advertised as a data analyst role, so check the responsibilities before accepting. Data engineer pays substantially more than data analyst at the same experience, and gets far less attention from career changers. And business analyst, despite the similar title, is a different job: more process and requirements work, less querying.
Which industry you join matters more than you think
| Industry | Data analyst average CTC | Salaries reported |
|---|---|---|
| Financial services | ₹10,00,166 | 5,945 |
| Banking | ₹9,74,553 | 2,076 |
| Software product | ₹9,06,581 | 5,742 |
| Management consulting | ₹8,49,978 | 12,936 |
| Internet | ₹7,21,337 | 6,685 |
| IT services and consulting | ₹6,08,630 | 45,258 |
| Analytics and KPO | ₹5,96,453 | 7,385 |
| BPO | ₹4,59,055 | 2,646 |
An analyst in financial services earns roughly 64 percent more than one in IT services for the same title, and more than double a BPO analyst. The catch is where the openings are: IT services and consulting accounts for 45,258 of the reported salaries, more than every other industry on the list combined. That is the standard Indian trade-off, and the standard answer is to take the services job to get in, then move once you have two years and a domain.
Where the jobs are by city
Gurugram pays the most at an average of ₹7,56,027 across 9,551 reported salaries, but Bengaluru dominates on volume with 34,467 salaries at ₹7,39,588. Then come New Delhi at ₹7,15,369, Hyderabad at ₹7,05,356, Mumbai at ₹6,88,306, Chennai at ₹6,86,103 and Pune at ₹6,83,592.
The gap across those metros is about 11 percent, so relocating for a city premium rarely pays after rent. What Bengaluru genuinely offers is density: more employers in one place means more interviews, more competing offers, and a shorter job search. The bigger gap is metro versus tier-2, where Ahmedabad averages ₹5,53,823.
How to read an Indian data analyst job ad
Check the tools before the title. An ad that lists only Excel and a reporting portal is an MIS role regardless of what it is called. An ad that lists SQL, a BI tool and a warehouse is the real thing.
Watch for the reporting line. Sitting inside a business function usually means broader work and better stakeholder exposure. Sitting inside a central shared-services team often means executing tickets.
Treat “experience” ranges as soft. Indian ads routinely ask for three years for genuinely junior work. Apply if you clear the tools bar.
Look for the word “stakeholder”. Where it appears, the role involves judgement. Where the ad is only verbs like extract, prepare and publish, the role is production reporting.
What the job is not
It is not a glamour role, and it is not mostly modelling. A realistic first year is heavy on data cleaning, chasing down why two systems disagree, and rebuilding reports because a definition changed. People who came expecting machine learning leave within a year; people who like solving small mysteries about why a number is wrong tend to do well and get promoted.
It is also not a route into data science by itself. It is a good starting point, but the transition needs deliberate work on statistics and Python on top of the day job.
How to get the first one
Employers hiring juniors in India check three things: can you write SQL live, have you built something end to end, and can you explain it. That is why a portfolio matters more than a certificate. Two or three projects on messy public data, each with the questions asked, the cleaning decisions taken and a dashboard or short write-up at the end, beats a list of course names.
If you are switching from a non-technical background, our guide to data analytics for non-tech graduates covers the route, and data analyst qualifications in India covers what actually gets checked on a CV.
Frequently asked questions
What does a data analyst do day to day?
Writes SQL to pull data, cleans and reconciles it, builds or updates dashboards, and investigates why a business metric moved. A large share of the week goes on data quality work rather than analysis itself, which surprises most people entering the field. The rest goes on explaining findings to people who need a decision, not a method.
What are the roles and responsibilities of a data analyst?
Writing SQL to pull data, cleaning and reconciling it, building and maintaining dashboards and recurring reports, running analyses when a metric moves, defining metrics so teams agree on them, presenting findings, and automating manual reporting. Across a week that usually means the weekly numbers early on, ad hoc requests and one larger analysis midweek, data quality work whenever two systems disagree, and a presentation or an automation at the end. At a startup the analyst also sets up the data, while at a large enterprise the role covers a narrower slice of it.
What qualifications do I need for a data analyst job in India?
A bachelor’s degree in any discipline, plus demonstrable SQL, Excel and one BI tool. Employers hire from commerce, economics, BBA, science and engineering backgrounds, and no specific stream is required at most companies. What is checked is whether you can query a database and explain a result, which is why portfolio projects carry more weight than the degree itself.
Which data analytics job pays the most in India?
Among senior individual-contributor roles, data architect leads with a median of ₹35,08,690 on AmbitionBox’s August 2026 data, ahead of analytics manager at ₹26,98,420. Among roles a career changer can realistically target within a few years, data engineer at ₹12,33,461 and data scientist at ₹16,08,105 both pay well above data analyst at ₹6,84,517. Industry matters too: a data analyst in financial services earns around 64 percent more than one in IT services.
Is data analytics a good career in India in 2026?
Yes, on volume and on entry accessibility. AmbitionBox holds 1,44,866 reported data analyst salaries in India and shows 18 percent growth over two years, and analyst work exists in almost every sector rather than only in tech. The honest caveat is that entry-level competition is heavy, so tool depth and a real portfolio matter more than they did five years ago.
What is the difference between a data analyst and a business analyst?
A data analyst works closer to the data, writing queries and building reporting. A business analyst works closer to the process, gathering requirements, mapping workflows and specifying what a system should do, usually with less SQL. AmbitionBox puts business analysts higher, at a median of ₹10,07,445 across 1,51,386 salaries against ₹6,84,517 for data analysts, partly because the title is often used for more senior work.
Can a fresher get a data analyst job in India?
Yes, though rarely straight from a degree without evidence of the tools. The common routes are a campus placement into an IT services or analytics firm, an internship that converts, or a career-change programme with placement support. Freshers who succeed almost always have two or three projects they can walk through in an interview.
Build the skills the job description actually lists
Read the responsibilities on this page again and the pattern is obvious: SQL, clean data, one BI tool, and the ability to explain a result. Everything else is negotiable at the entry point.
