A data engineer in India earns between ₹11.6 lakh and ₹12.9 lakh a year, averaging ₹12.2 lakh, according to AmbitionBox, which held about 1.1 lakh reported salaries for the role when we read it in September 2026. Indeed India puts the average at ₹9,68,560 and Payscale at ₹9,74,783. On 6figr and levels.fyi the median is roughly ₹21 lakh.
That is not a contradiction, and this article explains why before it gives you a ladder. Data engineering is also the role data analysts move into most often, so the last third covers what the move actually costs in skills.
Five sources that publish a number, and one that does not
All figures read in September 2026. Nothing below is blended across sources.
| Source | What it publishes | The figure | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| AmbitionBox | Typical range and average annual CTC | ₹11.6 lakh to ₹12.9 lakh, average ₹12.2 lakh | About 1.1 lakh salaries, 1 to 7 years |
| Indeed India | Average annual salary | ₹9,68,560, typical range ₹5,01,282 to ₹18,71,421 | 1,100 salaries reported |
| Payscale | Average annual pay | ₹9,74,783, base range ₹4.19 lakh to ₹20 lakh | 1,284 salary profiles |
| 6figr | Average and median total pay | Average ₹27.6 lakh, median ₹20.7 lakh | 5,339 verified profiles |
| levels.fyi | Median total compensation | ₹21,42,969, base salary median ₹20,04,264 | Sample count not shown on the page |
| Glassdoor India | Base pay floor only, the rest behind a sign-in wall | Visible floor ₹6 lakh | Not shown |
The top three cluster between ₹9.7 lakh and ₹12.2 lakh. The next two sit at roughly ₹21 lakh. That is a gap of about ₹9 lakh on the same title in the same month, and it is the single most important thing to understand before you quote any of these numbers at an employer.
6figr and levels.fyi are built from people who choose to submit a package, and that population concentrates in large technology firms, product companies and multinational capability centres. AmbitionBox, Indeed and Payscale draw on a far broader base that includes the IT services and consulting employers who hire the majority of Indian data engineers. Both sets are real. They describe two different employment markets that happen to share a job title.
Treat the ₹9.7 lakh to ₹12.2 lakh cluster as what a data engineer role is worth in the wider market, and ₹20 lakh and up as what the same title is worth inside a product or big-tech employer. The practical consequence: your employer type is worth more to your salary than two or three years of experience.
Data engineer salary by experience
The sources publish different slices rather than one clean ladder. Placed together, they give a usable picture.
| Point in the distribution | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level, under 1 year | ₹5,18,398 average, from 125 salaries | Payscale, September 2026 |
| 1 to 4 years, early career | ₹8,10,624 average, from 965 salaries | Payscale, September 2026 |
| 1 to 3 years | ₹7.6 lakh to ₹8.5 lakh, from 32,600 salaries | AmbitionBox, September 2026 |
| Broad-market middle | ₹11.6 lakh to ₹12.9 lakh across 1 to 7 years | AmbitionBox, September 2026 |
| Large-tech 25th percentile | ₹13,40,199 | levels.fyi, September 2026 |
| Large-tech middle | ₹20.7 lakh median on 6figr, ₹21,42,969 on levels.fyi | September 2026 |
| Large-tech 75th percentile | ₹32,78,820 | levels.fyi, September 2026 |
| Upper decile | Above ₹51.5 lakh on 6figr, ₹50,27,774 on levels.fyi | September 2026 |
| Top 1 percent | Above ₹123 lakh, highest single report ₹354.1 lakh | 6figr, September 2026 |
Two rows deserve a second look. AmbitionBox’s 1 to 3 year band at ₹7.6 lakh to ₹8.5 lakh rests on 32,600 salaries, which makes it the most solid early-career figure anywhere in this table. And levels.fyi’s 25th percentile of ₹13,40,199 is above AmbitionBox’s average for the entire role, which tells you exactly how far apart the two populations sit.
The fresher number, and the one figure to ignore
Payscale reports an average of ₹5,18,398 for data engineers with under a year of experience, from 125 salaries, read in September 2026. That is the fresher figure with a stated definition and a stated sample, and it is the one to plan around.
6figr’s fresher list puts data engineer at ₹21 lakh in the same month, roughly four times higher. Do not use it, and here is the evidence rather than the opinion: the same list shows senior data engineer at ₹19 lakh, which is below its own plain data engineer figure. A fresher scale where the senior title pays less than the junior one is not measuring what its label says. The adjacent entries on that list run software engineer ₹13 lakh, data scientist ₹12 lakh and data annotation engineer ₹3 lakh, which do not sit in any consistent order either.
AmbitionBox publishes no 0 to 1 year row for this title, and Glassdoor India’s readable base pay floor is ₹6 lakh. Both point towards Payscale rather than 6figr. A realistic first data engineering offer outside big tech sits in the ₹5 lakh to ₹6 lakh region, and the AmbitionBox 1 to 3 year band suggests you reach ₹7.6 lakh to ₹8.5 lakh within a couple of years.
Where the jobs are
None of these sources published a city-by-city pay table for this title that we could read in September 2026, so be sceptical of any article that hands you one with confident decimals. What 6figr does publish is where its data engineer profiles sit: Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurgaon, Chennai, Mumbai, Noida and Delhi.
That list is a map of where offers happen rather than a ranking of what they pay. It is still the more useful of the two. Competing offers move a number more than any city average does, and competing offers require a city with several employers who want the same skill in the same quarter.
What a data engineer does that an analyst does not
This is the part most salary articles skip, and it is the part that explains the pay.
| What the comparison covers | Data engineer | Data analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Top skills reported | Python, SQL, PySpark, data warehousing, Apache Spark, big data | SQL, Python, data analysis, Tableau |
| What the job produces | Pipelines, warehouses and the infrastructure that moves data | Queries, dashboards and an analysis someone acts on |
| Relationship to the data | Builds and maintains it | Consumes it |
| Who consumes the output | Analysts, data scientists, applications | Business owners and decision makers |
6figr’s skill shares for data engineer read Python 10 percent, SQL 9 percent, PySpark 6 percent, data warehousing 4 percent, Apache Spark 4 percent and big data 4 percent, as read in September 2026. Set that against the data analyst skill list of SQL, Python, data analysis and Tableau. SQL and Python appear on both. Distributed processing, warehousing and pipeline tooling appear on neither of the analyst lists any source publishes.
That non-overlap is the honest answer to why the engineer earns more. An analyst who writes a query that returns the wrong number produces a bad slide. An engineer whose pipeline fails at 3am produces a morning where nobody in the company has a number at all. The seat carries production responsibility, and production responsibility is what the market pays for.
AmbitionBox lists consulting, financial services and software product firms as the sectors driving the upper part of its range for this role, which is the same pattern that shows up for analysts: the closer the data sits to a revenue decision, the more the seat pays.
What an analyst has to learn to move across
Three real gaps, in the order they matter.
- Distributed processing. Spark, usually through PySpark, because a laptop-sized dataframe is not the job. This is the skill that appears on the engineer’s list and nowhere on the analyst’s.
- Pipeline orchestration and warehouse design. Scheduling, dependency management, failure handling and modelling a warehouse someone else can query without asking you what a column means.
- Python at production quality. Not analysis scripts. Version control, tests, code that runs unattended and tells you when it breaks.
SQL is the piece you already have, and it carries further here than people expect, because warehouse work is SQL-heavy. If your SQL is at the reporting level rather than the modelling level, that gap closes faster than the other three. Our walkthroughs of SQL joins and DDL commands cover the ground that separates querying a table from designing one, and Python for data analysis is the starting point for the language half.
A realistic timeline: an analyst with solid SQL and working Python is looking at several months of deliberate study plus one real pipeline they built end to end, not a weekend course. The move usually happens internally, from an analytics seat into the engineering team that already knows your work, rather than through a cold application.
Worth saying plainly: data engineering suits people who enjoy systems that must not fail more than they enjoy answering business questions. If the part of analytics you like is the questions, the better-paid move is towards data science or an analytics leadership seat, not this one. Our comparison of data analytics and data science lays out that fork.
Where a structured programme fits
The technical foundation under both routes is the same: SQL you can write fast, Python you can rely on, and enough statistics to know when a number is lying to you. SkilloVilla runs live online tracks with 1:1 mentorship from working practitioners, real projects and placement support, plus an offline centre in JP Nagar, Bengaluru. Hiring partners include Accenture, PwC, Razorpay, Flipkart, Swiggy and Lenskart. SkilloVilla reports that alumni in data roles earn between 4 and 15 LPA, with a median package of 9.5 LPA and a highest of 32 LPA.
SkilloVilla sells placement assistance rather than a job guarantee. Any programme promising you a data engineering job at the end of four months is describing a market that does not exist.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average data engineer salary in India in 2026?
AmbitionBox reports an average of ₹12.2 lakh a year with a typical range of ₹11.6 lakh to ₹12.9 lakh, from about 1.1 lakh reported salaries covering 1 to 7 years, as read in September 2026. Indeed India reports ₹9,68,560 and Payscale ₹9,74,783 in the same month. 6figr and levels.fyi report medians around ₹21 lakh, because their contributors cluster in large technology and product firms.
What is the starting salary for a data engineer in India?
Payscale reports an average of ₹5,18,398 for people with under a year of experience, from 125 salaries, read in September 2026, and ₹8,10,624 for the 1 to 4 year band from 965 salaries. AmbitionBox publishes no 0 to 1 year row, and its youngest band, 1 to 3 years, sits at ₹7.6 lakh to ₹8.5 lakh. 6figr’s fresher figure of ₹21 lakh for this role is internally inconsistent and should not be used.
Do data engineers earn more than data analysts in India?
Yes, on every source that publishes both. AmbitionBox put the data engineer average at ₹12.2 lakh in September 2026 against a data analyst median of ₹6,84,517 when we read the same source in August 2026. The difference comes from production responsibility and from a skill set, built around Spark, warehousing and pipeline work, that the analyst role does not require.
Which skills raise a data engineer’s salary?
6figr’s profile data for the role shows Python at 10 percent, SQL at 9 percent, PySpark at 6 percent, and data warehousing, Apache Spark and big data at 4 percent each, as read in September 2026. The distributed processing and warehousing skills are the ones that separate this title from analytics work, and AmbitionBox places consulting, financial services and software product firms above the median on sector.
Can a data analyst become a data engineer?
It is the most common move out of analytics, and the usual route is internal rather than through a cold application. The gaps are distributed processing such as Spark, pipeline orchestration and warehouse design, and production-grade Python, none of which appear on any published data analyst skill list. SQL carries over and carries further than most people expect, since warehouse work is SQL-heavy.
Why do salary sites disagree so much on data engineer pay?
They are counting two different employment markets. AmbitionBox, Indeed and Payscale include the IT services and consulting employers who hire most Indian data engineers, and land between ₹9.7 lakh and ₹12.2 lakh. 6figr and levels.fyi are built from voluntary submissions that concentrate in large technology and product companies, and land near ₹21 lakh. Neither is wrong about its own population.
Start with the layer both roles are built on
Nobody hires a data engineer who cannot write SQL, and nobody hires an analyst who cannot either. That is the layer to get genuinely good at first, whichever of the two you are aiming for.
SkilloVilla’s Data Analytics with Python track is ₹71,999, currently ₹58,999, and runs 4 to 5 months of live classes with mentors who work in the field. To start narrower, the Data Analytics and Statistics with Python course at ₹38,110 is the most useful single module to attempt first. Scholarships are available depending on your profile.
