A machine learning engineer in India earns between ₹12.7 lakh and ₹14 lakh a year, averaging ₹13.3 lakh, according to AmbitionBox, read in September 2026. Indeed India puts the average at ₹11,43,075 and Payscale at ₹10,22,861. On 6figr the median is ₹28.7 lakh and on levels.fyi it is ₹35,46,499, because those two count a different population.
That last gap is the widest of any role we have looked at on this blog, and it is the first thing to understand before you quote a number.
Five sources, two populations
Everything below was read in September 2026.
| Source | What it publishes | The figure | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| AmbitionBox | Typical range and average annual CTC | ₹12.7 lakh to ₹14 lakh, average ₹13.3 lakh | 9,700 salaries, 1 to 6 years |
| Indeed India | Average annual salary | ₹11,43,075, typical range ₹6,43,182 to ₹20,31,495 | 49 salaries reported |
| Payscale | Average annual pay | ₹10,22,861, base range ₹3.93 lakh to ₹30 lakh | 232 salary profiles |
| 6figr | Average and median total pay | Average ₹39 lakh, median ₹28.7 lakh | 2,449 verified profiles |
| levels.fyi | Median total compensation | ₹35,46,499, base salary median ₹31,49,883 | Sample count not shown on the page |
| Glassdoor India | Base pay floor only, the rest behind a sign-in wall | Visible floor ₹5 lakh | Not shown |
AmbitionBox, Indeed and Payscale land between ₹10.2 lakh and ₹13.3 lakh. 6figr and levels.fyi land between ₹28.7 lakh and ₹35.5 lakh. That is a factor of roughly three on the same job title in the same month.
The reason is who each source counts. 6figr and levels.fyi are built from packages people choose to submit, and those people cluster in large technology firms, product companies and multinational capability centres, where machine learning work is a funded product function. AmbitionBox, Indeed and Payscale include the wider market: services firms, mid-size product companies and the analytics arms of Indian enterprises, where the same title often means applied modelling on a small team.
One more caution on Indeed for this role specifically. Its average rests on 49 reported salaries, the thinnest sample of any figure in this article, so treat it as a rough marker rather than a measurement.
Where the money sits
| Point in the distribution | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level, under 1 year | ₹5,96,082 average, from 39 salaries | Payscale, September 2026 |
| 1 to 4 years, early career | ₹8,40,657 average, from 156 salaries | Payscale, September 2026 |
| 1 to 3 years | ₹9.2 lakh to ₹10.2 lakh, from 5,100 salaries | AmbitionBox, September 2026 |
| Broad-market middle | ₹12.7 lakh to ₹14 lakh across 1 to 6 years | AmbitionBox, September 2026 |
| Large-tech 25th percentile | ₹20,57,537 | levels.fyi, September 2026 |
| Large-tech middle | ₹28.7 lakh median on 6figr, ₹35,46,499 on levels.fyi | September 2026 |
| Large-tech 75th percentile | ₹61,60,826 | levels.fyi, September 2026 |
| Upper decile | Above ₹77.5 lakh on 6figr, ₹82,58,664 on levels.fyi | September 2026 |
| Top 1 percent | Above ₹165.9 lakh, highest single report ₹352.3 lakh | 6figr, September 2026 |
The levels.fyi 25th percentile of ₹20,57,537 is worth staring at. A quarter of the people reporting to that site earn less than a figure that sits well above AmbitionBox’s average for the whole role. If you want the upper table, the employer type is the decision, not the years.
On the fresher end, Payscale’s ₹5,96,082 from 39 salaries is the figure with a stated definition, and AmbitionBox publishes no 0 to 1 year row at all for this title. 6figr’s fresher list puts machine learning engineer at ₹15 lakh, roughly two and a half times higher, and its fresher-tagged figures were internally inconsistent for every role we checked in September 2026, so name that number separately if you use it rather than treating it as the market rate.
Machine learning engineer against data scientist
This is the comparison the role is usually weighed against, and the answer depends entirely on which source you ask. All figures read in September 2026.
| Source | Machine learning engineer | Data scientist |
|---|---|---|
| AmbitionBox | Average ₹13.3 lakh, from 9,700 salaries | Average ₹15.9 lakh, from 60,900 salaries |
| Indeed India | Average ₹11,43,075, from 49 salaries | Average ₹12,30,187, from 348 salaries |
| Payscale | Average ₹10,22,861, from 232 profiles | Average ₹10,17,652, from 1,267 profiles |
| 6figr | Median ₹28.7 lakh, from 2,449 profiles | Median ₹26.7 lakh, from 4,837 profiles |
| levels.fyi | Median ₹35,46,499 | Median ₹30,21,144, from 1,169 submissions |
The pattern is clean once you sort the sources by population. On the broad market, data scientist is ahead or level: AmbitionBox puts it ₹2.6 lakh higher, Indeed puts it slightly higher, and Payscale has them within about ₹5,000 of each other. On the large-tech sources, machine learning engineer is ahead: ₹2 lakh higher on 6figr, ₹5.25 lakh higher on levels.fyi.
That is not a contradiction. It says the machine learning engineer title is worth more than a data scientist title specifically inside companies that run models in production at scale, and worth about the same or slightly less everywhere else. If you are choosing between the two labels, you are really choosing an employer type.
The sample sizes say something too. AmbitionBox holds 60,900 data scientist salaries against 9,700 for machine learning engineers, and 6figr holds 4,837 against 2,449. The title is far rarer in India, because at most employers the work is folded into a data scientist or software engineer role rather than hired separately.
What separates the pay
Production, not modelling. 6figr’s skill shares for this role are machine learning at 5 percent, Python at 4 percent and deep learning at 3 percent, read in September 2026. The share figures are low because the profiles carry a wide mix of software engineering skills alongside them, which is the honest description of the job: this is a software engineering role with models in it. Training a model is the part everyone applying can do. Serving it, monitoring it and rolling it back when it drifts is the part that is scarce.
Where the roles are. None of these sources published a city-by-city pay table for this title that we could read in September 2026. 6figr does publish where its profiles sit: Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Pune, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Noida. Bangalore leads on volume, and volume is what produces competing offers.
The employer type, again. It is the largest single lever in every table above, worth more than the difference between this title and data scientist, and more than three or four years of experience on the broad-market side.
How the day differs from a data analyst’s
| What the comparison covers | Machine learning engineer | Data analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Top skills reported | Machine learning, Python, deep learning | SQL, Python, data analysis, Tableau |
| What the job produces | Models that run in production | Queries, dashboards and an analysis someone acts on |
| Time orientation | Predicting what has not happened yet | Describing and explaining what has |
| Who consumes the output | An application or an automated decision | A business owner making a call |
Python is the only skill on both lists. Model architecture, training pipelines and deployment appear on no published data analyst skill list from any source here, and SQL, Tableau and reporting do not carry a machine learning engineer’s seat. The two jobs share a language and very little else, which is worth knowing before you plan a switch on the assumption that they are neighbours.
The realistic route in from analytics
Nobody moves from a data analyst seat to a machine learning engineer seat in one step, and any programme telling you otherwise is selling you something. The honest sequence has three parts.
- Statistics and machine learning theory. Not a library’s API, the actual reasoning: why a model is overfitting, what a validation split is protecting you from, when a simpler model is the right answer. This is the part that takes the longest and the part interviews test hardest.
- A framework. PyTorch or TensorFlow. Both appear on 6figr’s data scientist skill list as well, which is why data science is the more attainable first step and machine learning engineering usually the second.
- Software engineering practice. Version control, testing, code that another engineer can read, and something you have actually deployed. This is where analysts most often stall, because analysis-script Python and production Python are different disciplines.
The usual path is analyst, then a data science or applied modelling seat, then engineering. Our read on data analytics and data science covers the first of those two moves, and the data scientist salary guide covers what the middle step pays and how few genuine fresher openings exist at that level.
One limitation worth stating. If what you enjoy about analytics is answering business questions and being in the room when a decision is made, machine learning engineering moves you away from both. The seat sits closer to the software team than to the business. Plenty of people discover that after the switch rather than before it.
Where a structured programme fits
The foundation under all three steps is the same: Python you can rely on, statistics you genuinely understand, and enough SQL to get at the data in the first place. SkilloVilla runs live online tracks with 1:1 mentorship from working practitioners, real projects and placement support, plus an offline centre in JP Nagar, Bengaluru. Hiring partners include Accenture, Mu Sigma, Amazon, Flipkart, PwC and Razorpay. SkilloVilla reports that alumni in data roles earn between 4 and 15 LPA, with a median package of 9.5 LPA and a highest of 32 LPA.
SkilloVilla sells placement assistance rather than a job guarantee, and for this role in particular that distinction is worth insisting on. A four-month programme does not produce a machine learning engineer. It produces someone who can take the first step credibly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average machine learning engineer salary in India in 2026?
AmbitionBox reports an average of ₹13.3 lakh a year with a typical range of ₹12.7 lakh to ₹14 lakh, from 9,700 reported salaries covering 1 to 6 years, as read in September 2026. Indeed India reports ₹11,43,075 and Payscale ₹10,22,861 in the same month. 6figr reports a median of ₹28.7 lakh and levels.fyi ₹35,46,499, because their contributors concentrate in large technology and product companies.
What is the starting salary for a machine learning engineer in India?
Payscale reports an average of ₹5,96,082 for people with under a year of experience, from 39 salaries, read in September 2026, and ₹8,40,657 for the 1 to 4 year band from 156 salaries. AmbitionBox publishes no 0 to 1 year row for this title, and its youngest band, 1 to 3 years, sits at ₹9.2 lakh to ₹10.2 lakh from 5,100 salaries. 6figr’s fresher figure of ₹15 lakh describes hires at large technology firms rather than the market rate.
Do machine learning engineers earn more than data scientists in India?
It depends on the employer. On AmbitionBox the data scientist average is ₹15.9 lakh against ₹13.3 lakh for machine learning engineers, and Payscale has the two within about ₹5,000 of each other, all read in September 2026. On 6figr and levels.fyi, whose contributors sit in large technology and product firms, the machine learning engineer figure is ₹2 lakh to ₹5.25 lakh higher.
Which skills raise a machine learning engineer’s salary?
6figr’s profile data for the role lists machine learning, Python and deep learning as the named skills, read in September 2026, carried alongside a wide mix of software engineering skills. Deployment and production experience is what separates two candidates with similar portfolios, because training a model is common and keeping one running is not.
Can a data analyst become a machine learning engineer?
Yes, but not in one move. The gaps are statistics and machine learning theory, a framework such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, and software engineering practice, none of which appear on any published data analyst skill list. The usual route runs analyst, then a data science or applied modelling seat, then engineering, and it is measured in years rather than months.
Why are machine learning engineer salary figures so far apart?
The sources count two different markets. AmbitionBox, Indeed and Payscale include services firms and mid-size employers and land between ₹10.2 lakh and ₹13.3 lakh. 6figr and levels.fyi are built from voluntary submissions clustered in large technology and product companies and land between ₹28.7 lakh and ₹35.5 lakh. Indeed’s figure for this role also rests on only 49 salaries, which makes it the least solid of the six.
Start where the route actually starts
Every path into this role runs through statistics, Python and data you can get at yourself. That is the step to take first, and it is the step that pays for itself even if you stop there.
SkilloVilla’s Data Science and AI track is ₹1,01,999, currently ₹89,999, and runs as live classes with mentors who do this work for a living, real projects and placement support. To start narrower, the Machine Learning using Python course at ₹38,110 is the single most useful module to attempt first. Scholarships are available depending on your profile.
